Whenever Donald Trump periodically gives a rally speech or an on-camera interview, it serves as a reminder of why his handlers appear to try to limit such public appearances as much as possible: Trump’s cognitive abilities are in collapse. If he appeared in public more often, more of the general public would see that he’s a goner, and everyone would know he’s not really going to be a part of the 2024 race.

To that end, during a rally speech today, Trump accidentally announced the wrong candidate. No, really. According to NBC News, here’s what Trump said: “We’ve endorsed J.P., right—J.D. Mandel. And he’s doing great.” In reality, Trump has endorsed Josh Mandel’s opponent, J.D. Vance, much to Mandel’s dismay. The kicker is that even with Trump’s endorsement, Vance is running neck and neck with Mandel, suggesting Trump’s endorsements aren’t worth much. They may be worth even less if Trump keeps accidentally announcing he’s endorsed the other guy.

This is just embarrassing. It’s one thing to get tongue tied. It’s another to botch something this important, and then fail to even clean it up. Trump doesn’t even appear to know who he’s endorsing. It raises the question of whether Trump is even the one making these endorsements, or if his remaining handlers are reduced to doing this kind of thing on his behalf, in the hope of keeping up appearances. It’s not working. The more Trump emerges in public, the more the general public will see that he’s simply a goner.
