Rudy Giuliani finds himself in a no-win situation, to put it mildly. The FBI raid of his home earlier this year, and the subsequent leaks to the media about the federal criminal case against him, make clear that he’s going to end up standing criminal trial on a number of charges – some of which relate to the antics he carried out in Donald Trump’s name. At the same time, he’s also facing a massive civil suit from the voting machine company he lied about as part of his last ditch attempt at somehow magically keeping Trump in office.

The real trouble for Rudy may be that he has to try to fend off both of these legal cases at once – and his best move with regard to the civil case may not be the best move with regard to the criminal case and vice versa. For instance, Rudy’s only real defense in the civil case would be to claim that he honestly believed his lies about Dominion voting machines were true when he made them. But MSNBC has the transcript of his deposition in that case, and it turns out he basically admitted in his testimony that he knew his claims were garbage.

This confession certainly doesn’t help him in the civil case. So why did Rudy do it? As some have pointed out, during the deposition he was under oath. Perjury charges for lying in a civil deposition tend to be rare. But with Rudy being well aware that he’s currently under federal criminal investigation, he may have feared that lying about Dominion voting machines under oath could somehow result in perjury charges being tacked on to the list of criminal indictments he’s about to face.

Regardless of Rudy Giuliani’s reasoning for confessing during his deposition, he just made it a lot easier for Dominion to pick him apart. He also helped ensure that he’s going to lose in the court of public opinion – not that there’s anything left of his reputation at this point anyway. But it appears that Rudy may be so worried about the criminal charges that are coming his way, he’s forfeiting on all other fronts in a last ditch effort to stay out of prison. The kicker is that, with the mountain of evidence the Feds reportedly have against Rudy, it won’t work anyway.
