Yesterday was the worst day of Donald Trump’s dying presidency yet. After having bet everything he had left on the demented gambit of locking immigrant children in cages and holding them hostage, overwhelming public backlash forced him to partially back down. He had to give away his ill-gotten leverage for nothing. Then the Senate rejected his latest cash-grab for his donors. So naturally, Trump ended the day with an unhinged speech at a political rally several states away.

Donald Trump predictably used his rally to tell lie after lie after filthy lie about what he’s doing to these immigrant kids and why he’s doing it. But then he launched into a bizarre rant: “You ever notice they always call the other side the elite? The elite! Why are they elite? I have a much better apartment than they do. I’m smarter than they are. I’m richer than they are. I became president, and they didn’t.”

This was, of course, one step on the maturity scale above “nanny nanny boo boo.” Come to think of it, maybe this was one step below it. It was pure garbage. But it may tell us something about Trump’s state of mind. Who are these elites he’s talking about? No one knows, least of all him. But it’s clear that Trump has now selected a designated enemy in his mind, whom he’s blaming for his failures. Why does he need to set someone up to take the blame for the demise of his presidency? Doesn’t he keep telling us that he’s winning? This tells us that he doesn’t believe it – not even a little bit.

Donald Trump has always been perversely skilled at convincing the nation’s biggest losers that their own failures in life are the fault of other groups of people. It’s the same tactic that every fascist politician has used, of course. But the point is that you’re supposed to con your trashy supporters into believing that they’re the victims. Instead, Trump is now trying to convince his supporters – and himself – that he’s the victim. He’s always been a whiner. But now he’s picked a group – the “elites” – whom he’ll blame for his ouster. We’re getting closer to th end. Even he knows it.
