By now we’ve all heard the news that Congressman Matt Gaetz is reportedly under Department of Justice investigation for allegedly having sex with an underage girl and transporting her across state lines. But as it turns out, this disturbing story is only a fraction of a larger and even more disturbing storyline.

During her MSNBC show tonight, Rachel Maddow pieced together the entire narrative as it’s currently known. It began five years ago with a Florida county tax collector Joel Greenberg, who went on a wild and paranoid spending spree with taxpayer money, including everything from guns to private computer servers that he set on fire. Naturally, the guy was pals with Donald Trump and Roger Stone. Greenberg ended up getting arrested on a variety of charges, and that’s where the story shifts to Matt Gaetz.

After Greenberg was arrested and his devices were seized, prosecutors circled back and indicted him on underage sex trafficking charges. Greenberg allegedly went so far as to abuse his government position to access public records databases in order to identify the underage girls. Now, according to Maddow, it’s the long running Greenberg investigation that led the DOJ to probe Greenberg’s ally Matt Gaetz for also allegedly trafficking an underage girl.

Matt Gaetz tweeted this evening that he’s completely innocent and that he’s being extorted over this by an unnamed former DOJ official. The truth will come out one way or the other. But now we know that the allegation against Gaetz didn’t just suddenly come out of left field; it’s tied to the broader probe into Greenberg.
