Donald Trump is coming off one of the worst weeks that any sitting president has ever faced. Robert Mueller all but announced that Trump should be impeached. Trump’s own staff decided that he’s too far gone psychologically to even so much as see John McCain’s name on the side of a ship. Trump isn’t getting out of this mess – so he’s decided to punish America on his way down.

Last night Donald Trump rolled out a new move that is so guaranteed to fail, even some folks on his side seem to be left scratching their heads. Trump announced that a five percent tariff will be placed on all goods from Mexico, starting a week and a half from now, unless Mexico somehow stops all asylum seekers from approaching the U.S. border before then. Trump can’t win with this strategy, because it’ll wreck the U.S. economy just as swiftly as it wrecks the Mexican economy. In fact the U.S. stock market took a large yet predictable tumble today, and Dow Futures have since dropped even lower in aftermarket trading.

But that’s okay, Donald Trump says, because the tariffs are going to pay for his border wall that no one else in government is willing to pay for. No really, Trump said this today, according to Bloomberg. Finally, he’s getting Mexico to pay for his wall, he claims. That means Trump is still sticking with the asinine false claim that a U.S. tariff is paid by Mexico, when it’s actually paid by the people in the U.S. who are buying these goods.

Even Donald Trump isn’t this stupid. By now even his braindead economic advisers have surely explained to him a thousand times what a tariff really is. He knows he’s punishing U.S. consumers with these idiotic tariffs against Mexico. He knows he’s tanking the U.S. economy. He knows this move can’t magically work out in his favor. He’s just trying to punish America as he circles the drain.
