For the second press conference in a row today, Donald Trump flat out admitted that he’s willing to fix the Post Office in exchange for whatever he can get back from House Democrats in return. In so doing, Trump admitted that he knows he can’t simply hold the Post Office hostage through the election, and that he’s merely taken it hostage in the hope of scaring everyone, so he can get as big of concessions in return as possible.

Tonight we’re seeing signs that Trump’s Post Office gambit is beginning to fall apart already. For instance, the USPS Inspector General has announced an investigation into the Trump regime’s Post Office antics, to see if laws have been broken. This forces Trump’s Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to start playing defense, making him less effective at playing offense.

This comes even as the Post Office has announced that in response to the widespread backlash, it’s ceased hauling away blue mailboxes (this was just a scare tactic to try to get people to panic and conclude that Trump has magically won). In addition, the House has filed a criminal complaint with the New Jersey Attorney General, who has the power to bring criminal charges against anyone in the Trump regime who’s breaking the law with these antics. And in perhaps the most clear sign that the tide is turning, Senator Mitt Romney – who only likes to take a side when he thinks it’ll end up being the winning side – is now speaking out in defense of the Post Office.

All of this adds up to place significant pressure on Donald Trump to cave on the Post Office. Again, he was never going to be able to break the Post Office and just leave it broken through Election Day. Republican voters want their prescriptions and Social Security checks to show up on time – and they want to be able to vote by mail too. Trump can’t risk alienating them by leaving the Post Office broken for months. Trump has merely been trying to scare us into giving up the biggest concessions possible in exchange for restoring the Post Office. With the way things are falling apart for him tonight, the concessions he gets back in return may not even be that significant.
