Phony drama until the end

On Monday we learned that over the past couple months DOJ Special Counsel Jack Smith has gotten two of Donald Trump’s own attorneys to testify against him to a grand jury. By extension this means Smith first managed to get the courts to clear the way for such testimony. This makes pretty clear what the DOJ has been up to when it comes to its criminal case against Trump. Even as this news was surfacing, at one point on Monday, MSNBC had a chyron on the screen that said Attorney General Merrick Garland was “dithering” when it came to Trump.

The real contrast between reality, and the often fictional world of cable news, could not have been more stark. Where do you even start with this nonsense? It’s not as if MSNBC wrote this chyron on Sunday night and then got caught with its pants down on Monday, because part of the news about Trump’s attorneys testifying broke on Sunday. This chyron was a willful, intentional piece of fiction, based on nothing, and stating the precise opposite of the facts.

For that matter, Merrick Garland isn’t even running the DOJ’s Trump probe, Smith is. How can Garland be “dithering” when he’s not even in charge of it? But facts like that don’t seem to matter. The (entire) mainstream media has spent so long building up Garland as an evil lazy cowardly bogey man who’s supposedly hiding under his desk and/or trying to help Trump, at this point all the media has to do is mention his name negatively, and it’s enough to outrage audiences into staying glued to their screens for the next several hours.

What’s particularly disturbing โ€“ and this is a trend that I warned you would likely happen โ€“ is that the more obvious it becomes that Trump is about to be indicted, the more frantically the media is trying to convince you of the opposite. The media is almost desperate to mislead you into believing that Trump is on the verge of magically getting away with it all, because that’s what’ll scare and outrage you into staying tuned in every day.

If the major media outlets were to just admit that Trump is about to be criminally indicted in three jurisdictions, and that those processes are firmly on track, and that there’s no drama or hijinks involved at all, then you’ll tune out until the indictments start happening. And the media can’t afford to let you wander away, even temporarily. So as it becomes more obvious that Trump is about to go down, the media is working even harder to convince you that Trump will magically get away with it all.

Then, when Trump is indicted, the media will act like this very obvious thing that was always going to happen is instead some shocking and unprecedented breaking news that no one could have seen coming. Then they’ll pivot into how he’s going to magically get away with it all at trial, or whatever ratings-driven scare tactic comes next. But when that happens, remember that the media clowns who tell you Trump will never be convicted are the same media clowns who just got done telling you Trump would never be indicted โ€“ and be skeptical of their doomsday hysteria accordingly.
