When Donald Trump gave his Oval Office address tonight, he said a number of stupid, confusing, and incoherent things. Wall Street wasn’t impressed in the least, and sent overnight stock trading off a cliff. Now it turns out Trump said something so stupid, he’s desperately trying to walk it back.

During his television address tonight, Donald Trump announced a thirty day travel ban from most of Europe to the United States. In so doing, he specifically stated that the ban will include people and cargo. But cutting off cargo ships would blow a huge hole in the U.S. economy and in the supply chain. It’s not clear if Trump said it by mistake to begin with, or if he didn’t realize the negative impact it would have.

Either way, Donald Trump (or whoever is handling his Twitter account at this point) just posted this fairly panicked tweet aimed at clarifying that cargo ships will not be banned from entering the United States: “Hoping to get the payroll tax cut approved by both Republicans and Democrats, and please remember, very important for all countries & businesses to know that trade will in no way be affected by the 30-day restriction on travel from Europe. The restriction stops people not goods.”

It’s not clear why Donald Trump thinks that the coronavirus can’t be transmitted to the United States via cargo ships, considering those ships have crews. But Trump clearly cares more about trying to keep the stock market from falling any further than he does about human lives, so there you have it.
