Judge Tanya Chutkan hit Donald Trump with a gag order today, preventing him from speaking about certain relevant aspects of his upcoming criminal trial. She also confirmed that Trump’s trial is still on track for its March 2024 start date. The gag order had a nearly 100% chance of happening, and her refusal to delay the trial had a literally 100% chance of happening, but these things are both good news.
Of course people on social media are already tripping over each other to yell “Trump will just violate the gag order!” But this ignores reality. Trump has faced varying degrees of gag orders in three recent civil trials, and he’s abided by those gag orders in all three instances. That’s because he knows he’d get hauled away if he violated them.
So Trump, a creature of habit, will once again very likely abide by this gag order – just like he did the last three times. He’ll run his mouth obnoxiously in other ways, but he’ll cower when it comes to this gag order. Trump is a guy who always cowers when he comes up against someone who has power over him. Bullies are always cowards in that way.
