White House National Security Council official Tim Morrison, who by the way just resigned, testified to the House impeachment inquiry yesterday that he personally witnessed Donald Trump attempt to engage in a quid pro quo with Ukraine. This was some of the most devastating testimony against Trump to date. Just don’t tell Trump that.

The thing is, Tim Morrison tried to appease Donald Trump a little by saying that even though he was on the Trump-Ukraine phone call and he definitely considered Trump’s behavior to be quid pro quo, he doesn’t personally consider it to have been illegal. That’s cute, but Morrison isn’t an interpreter of the law, and he knows it. Morrison’s personal legal assessment will carry literally zero weight in the impeachment process, while Morrison’s confirmation of a quid pro quo will play a huge role in taking Trump down.

Unfortunately for Trump, his handlers appeared to have tried to cheer him up by telling him that Tim Morrison’s testimony today was somehow good news for him. That led Trump to end up tweeting “Thank you to Tim Morrison for your honesty.” Oops.

Imagine if a witness testified in court that he saw you go into a bank with a gun in hand and hold the place up, and then come out with a sack of cash, and that in his view you had robbed the bank – but in his personal legal assessment, bank robbery isn’t illegal. You’d be crushed to hear this testimony, because it would send you to prison. Yet this is precisely what Tim Morrison just said about Donald Trump, and Trump is thanking him for it.
