After Chief Justice John Roberts took the unprecedented step of publicly criticizing Donald Trump today for his attacks on Obama-appointed judges, we all knew Trump would end up firing back at Roberts. Sure enough, Trump is already having a meltdown about Roberts, revealing that he no longer has any shred of self restraint, and suggesting that Trump is nearing the end of his rope.

It all started Donald Trump lost a federal appeals court ruling on immigration, and lashed out at the judge for being an “Obama judge.” Nevermind, of course, that the lower court judge who originally ruled against Trump on this issue was in fact appointed by Trump; facts are optional in Trump’s world. But this was enough to prompt the normally restrained John Roberts to condemn Trump today for trying to paint some judges as being less legitimate or worthy than others. And now Trump is in the weeds over it.

Here’s what Donald Trump tweeted about the matter: “Sorry Chief Justice John Roberts, but you do indeed have “Obama judges,” and they have a much different point of view than the people who are charged with the safety of our country. It would be great if the 9th Circuit was indeed an “independent judiciary,” but if it is why are so many opposing view (on Border and Safety) cases filed there, and why are a vast number of those cases overturned. Please study the numbers, they are shocking. We need protection and security – these rulings are making our country unsafe! Very dangerous and unwise!”

Excuse us while we take a moment to laugh at the absurdity of Donald Trump telling the much smarter and more prepared John Roberts to “study” anything. But the real upshot here is that the Supreme Court is going to end up having to decide things like whether Donald Trump can be subpoenaed and/or indicted while he’s still in office. If Roberts ends up feeling like he’s constitutionally justified in ruling either way, and he’s looking for a meaningful tiebreaker, Trump’s unconstitutional assault on the judiciary could conceivably end up being what pushes Roberts to go against him. Trump is not helping himself right now.
