Donald Trump held a coronavirus press briefing today for the third time in a row. This time he finally brought in an expert to speak. Unfortunately, he inexplicably brought in a guy whose expertise involves throwing a baseball. In what sounds like a game of Mad Libs gone wrong, Trump had former pitcher Mariano Rivera speak at his press briefing for no apparent reason.

It was a bizarre stunt that no one saw coming, yet it somehow wasn’t surprising. Then Trump announced something that we all did see coming: he officially canceled the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville, Florida. This came just days after the local Sheriff announced that he didn’t see any way the event could be pulled off.

This means that Donald Trump took the Republican National Convention out of the swing state of North Carolina, alienating people there, just so he could move it to the swing state of Florida, where he’s now alienated even more people by sending them scrambling to put together a last minute event that he ended up canceling anyway.

The irony is that Trump moved the convention out of North Carolina partially because he didn’t want attendees to have to wear masks. Trump has since caved on masks and is encouraging everyone to wear one. If he’d just left the convention in North Carolina and allowed masks to happen, it might have ended up taking place. But because Trump threw a narcissistic tantrum, he’s ended up with two alienated swing states and no convention. The guy’s falling to pieces.
