When House Republican Lauren Boebert decided to move from Colorado’s 3rd District to Colorado’s 4th District for the 2024 election, anyone could have told her it was a bad idea. Sure, the 4th District is more right wing. But Boebert was always going to have a hard time surviving the 4th District’s crowded Republican primary contest. And now things have taken a much uglier turn for her. In fact her career may have just ended.

Colorado’s 4th District was only becoming available because longtime House Republican Ken Buck was supposed to retire at the end of his term. But this week he announced that he’s retiring next week. This sets up a special election to replace him in about ninety days. If the Republican Party picked Boebert as its special election nominee in the 4th District, she’d have to resign her current 3rd District seat in order to run. That would put the House Republican majority even more in danger. So we predicted that the party would likely not choose her to run in the special election.

Sure enough, Boebert announced today that she won’t be running in the special election. This probably means that the Republican Party indeed informed her that it wouldn’t be picking her as the special election nominee, for fear of losing the House majority. In any case, this means that one of the other Republican primary candidates in the 4th District will win next month’s special election, and will then be able to turn around and run as the incumbent in November.

Lauren Boebert was already facing an uphill battle in the 4th District race in November, even with an open field. Now she’ll have to run a primary challenge in November against a Republican incumbent. Good luck with that. In other words Boebert’s career may have just ended.
