Politico reported that McCarthy said House Republicans “are in a good place” on their spending bill, but looking at everything else, that is, at most, an exaggeration. After being behind closed doors for hours, Republicans came out with nothing. It doesn’t help that they continue to try to please Donald Trump, and followers that they are, they’re listening to him. McCarthy is being chopped into pieces, and he doesn’t even know it.

Several Republicans refused to go along with McCarthy’s defense funding bill. As AP reported, they voted against the bill and were joined by Democrats in putting a stop to it. One can only wonder if he now regrets repeatedly giving in to the far-right members of his party, who now seem to be holding their power and Donald Trump over his head, who has come out ordering them to shut down the government. Don’t worry about the millions of Americans a shutdown will hurt. No need to think about the chaos that will ensue. If Donald Trump gets what he wants, they’re all happy. Trump, of course, has an ulterior motive. He wants Jack Smith’s investigations shut down, but he’s too stupid to know that shutting down the government won’t accomplish that. He has already been indicted, and none of that is going to go away while millions suffer. Again, who in their right mind continues to vote for these people?

Donald Trump is not in power and likely never will be again. These people are bending to an imaginary god who has no power. They believe, however, that their power is in supporting him, but what will they do when he is convicted of the myriad crimes with which he has been charged? They even attempt to cover for him. When a reporter asked McCarthy about Trump’s demand that they shut down to end the investigations, McCarthy replied that Trump merely wanted them to “hold the line” and “pass appropriate bills.” Please. Trump has no idea what bills are appropriate. He’s not in the same position as the many people who voted these clowns into office, and he could care less about any of them. Similarly, McCarthy doesn’t care either.

McCarthy is most concerned about his precious speakership. No matter which way he goes, because of the agreement he made to be ousted, he is in peril. He has put himself in a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” position. The far-right will never forgive him if he passes a bill with Democratic support. They also care nothing about the people who sent them to Washington. All they want is power, and McCarthy has given it to them. McCarthy now finds himself between the proverbial rock and a hard place. He wanted the speakership so badly that he was willing to bend to anyone’s will. He is a terrible “leader,” and the word should never be spoken in the same breath as his name. Leaders don’t bend; leaders lead. McCarthy has no idea how to lead, and the rest of the House Republicans are running roughshod over him.
