Remember when I wrote this morning that Kenneth Chesebro’s request for a speedy trial wasn’t going to somehow magically help Trump, and instead it was just going to give Fani Willis an opening to force Trump’s trial to happen sooner. Now she’s going for it, seeking an October 23rd 2023 trial date for Chesebro and Trump.

Chesebro is now filing to sever his trial date from Trump. But that may not work either. Courts could instead decide to split the difference between Chesebro’s speedy trial request and Willis’ request to try them all together, by picking a joint trial date in November or something.

The courts have discretion in all this, and we’ll see what they decide to do. But the point is that Trump and Chesebro were not going to magically defeat Fani Willis with some silly move like Chesebro filing for a speedy trial. Nothing in life is that simplistic.

Each time Trump and his goons so much as fart, the media automatically trots out all these contrarian hot takes about how it’s a genius plan and we’re all doomed. And those hot takes never correlate with how the real world works. Trump and his people are just stupid, and they’re out of options. They’re throwing random nonsense at the wall out of frustration. It’s just laugh out loud stuff. That may not make for as ratings-friendly of a story as “oh no here’s their magic wand” but it’s simply the truth.

By the way, people tend to try their most realistic idea first. If this was their Plan A, then their Plan B or Plan C will be even dumber and even more ineffective. There isn’t going to be an “oh no they’ve really found the magic wand this time” down the road.

These kinds of doomsday hot takes can always be logically picked apart with ten seconds of critical thought. If Georgia RICO laws were so poorly constructed that they could be magically defeated just by one co-defendant seeking a speedy trial, no one would ever go down for RICO!

But if you look at Georgia RICO history in general, and Fani Willis’ RICO track record in particular, pretty much everyone goes down for it. No one has ever magic wanded their way out of RICO charges with some simplistic court filing.

Trump and Chesebro are on trial because they got caught trying the dumbest plot to overthrow the government of all time, a plot so dumb they couldn’t have achieved their goals even if their plot had worked as intended. They’re idiots. They are not suddenly legal geniuses now.
