The U.S. Senate race in Arizona in 2024 is already set to be something of a circus, given that incumbent Senator Kyrsten Sinema is a corrupt space cadet who’s seeking reelection but doesn’t seem to care if she wins. It’s made even more of a circus by the fact that Kari Lake (yes, that Kari Lake) is attempting to become the Republican nominee for the Senate race.

That leaves Democratic candidate Ruben Gallego as the only sane adult in the race. The good news is while it’ll be a tight race, he’s slightly ahead in two-way and three-way polling. Of course Kari Lake is doing everything she can to make the race into a dumpster fire, and to that end, she pretended to “randomly” run into Gallego at the airport. Given that she was wearing a live mic, it’s kind of a dead giveaway that she staged the whole thing.

Watch the entire farce for yourself if you like:

.
Both sides got what they needed out of the exchange. Ruben Gallego came off as poised, professional and reasonable – exactly how you present yourself as a candidate for statewide office in a purple state. Kari Lake came off as a partisan hack – exactly how you present yourself if you’re looking to raise money from far right idiots. Yes, this was a fundraising stunt.

But while Kari Lake seems to be good at these kinds of moneymaking stunts (lord knows what she’s doing with the money), this kind of behavior is a really bad way to get elected. Voters closer to the middle, who decide a toss-up race like this one, hate stupidity and unprofessionalism. Lake either doesn’t understand how to win, or isn’t trying to win.

It’s enough to make you wonder if Lake will even end up being the Republican nominee in this race by the time we get to 2024. She’s certainly not doing anything to convince anyone that she can win a general election. But no matter who the Republican nominee ends up being, this will be a tight race. Statewide races in Arizona are always close these days (one of them was decided by a 0.01% margin in 2022). Throw in the chaos that Sinema will bring to the race, and nothing can be taken for granted.

That’s why it’s more important than ever to get behind Democratic candidate Ruben Gallego, starting now. You can find his official 2024 campaign donation link here.
