Judge Aileen Cannon sets trial date – and Donald Trump isn’t going to be happy

Judge Aileen Cannon has set Trump’s trial for May 2024. Later than it should be, but still well before the election. It was always highly unlikely that she would grant Trump’s request to postpone the trial until after the election. In any case, if Jack Smith wants a swifter trail he can bring additional Espionage Act charges against Trump in another federal jurisdiction such as New Jersey.

And of course Smith is days away from indicting Trump for January 6th in Washington DC, a trial that will almost certainly take place before 2023 is over. At this point it’s a question of how many Trump trials Jack Smith wants to hold, and in how many places. That’s what happens when you’re prosecuting someone who’s committed so many crimes in so many jurisdictions.

At this point Donald Trump appears set to stand trial in Florida on federal charges, Washington DC on federal charges, Georgia on state charges, and New York on state charges – and that’s just what we know about. There are also active state level criminal investigations into Trump in Michigan and Arizona, along with whatever else Jack Smith brings.

Remember, in order to end up in prison, Trump only needs to be convicted on any one felony count in any one of his trials.
