Last night Joe Biden had the best night of his 2020 campaign in South Carolina. It was arguably the first good night of his campaign. But now that black voters are finally being allowed to participate in this ridiculous primary process, they’re overwhelmingly choosing Biden. This is really good news for him as we head into more diverse states. Now Biden’s day just got even better.

Pete Buttigieg is dropping out of the race, according to the New York Times. We’re just two days away from Super Tuesday, so things are about to start shifting in chaotic and not-entirely-predictable ways, but there’s no mistaking the fact that this is going to help Biden overall. Biden will pick up the largest chunk of Pete’s voters by far, while Bernie Sanders will likely pick up the smallest chunk of Pete’s voters.

Pete’s decision to drop out just boosted the number of delegates that Biden will pick up on Tuesday, and shrunk the number of delegates that Sanders will pick up on Tuesday. Sanders will still likely get the majority of Super Tuesday delegates, thanks to California. But after Tuesday, Biden should start cleaning up in a number of states.

It’s becoming more obvious that by rule we’re likely heading to a brokered convention, because no one will have 50% of the delegates. Joe Biden has always been the most likely nominee to come out of a brokered convention, because he’s the most unifying figure, Sanders is the most divisive figure, and no one else will have enough delegates to argue a strong case. But now Biden is going to head into the convention with a whole lot more delegates, thanks to Pete Buttigieg’s decision to get out now, as opposed to later.
