Jim Jordan just decided he wants to get his ass handed to him by Fani Willis
2023 isn’t even over yet, and these House Republicans are already officially out of ideas. Now that they’ve had to cave on the budget yet again, and they’ve had to expel one of their own in George Santos just to try to keep their heads above water, House Republicans would be trotting out their last best semblance of a strategy in the hope of turning things around – if they had one. They clearly don’t.
That’s why House Republicans are now circling back to the ideas that they’ve already tried and failed. They’re talking about impeaching President Biden again, but this time no one thinks they’re serious. They’re playing up Hunter Biden conspiracy theories again, but there’s still no one who cares. And now Jim Jordan is going after Fulton County DA Fani Willis again, just because he can’t help himself.
Up to now, Jordan’s “investigation” into Fani Willis’ Trump investigation has pretty much consisted of Jordan sending a request letter and, well, that’s it. So now Jordan is taking things to the next level by… sending another request letter. No really, this is his strategy.
This time Jim Jordan is adding in the new wrinkle of requesting that Fani Willis provide him with all communications that she had with the January 6th Committee. That’s cute, given that she’s already been open about those communications.
Jordan knows that Willis doesn’t have to give him anything. He and his committee have no oversight whatsoever over a local District Attorney’s criminal investigation. Jordan keeps giving this away by merely “requesting” information from Willis. He knows that if he were to demand information or try to subpoena her, he’d be committing obstruction of justice, and she could criminally charge him.
In other words, Jim Jordan’s letter is a whole lot of nothing. He’s purposely made his letter legally toothless, so that he can’t get in legal trouble himself. He’s only doing this so he can turn around and tell his far right constituents that he went after Fani Willis in the name of helping Donald Trump, when in reality all Jordan did was send a letter.
The only real outcome here is that Fani Willis now gets another opportunity to hand Jim Jordan’s ass to him in the form of a response letter reminding him of just how powerless he is. Bring it on.
