When Donald Trump announced that he was visiting Kenosha, Wisconsin, some observers on social media feared this meant victory for him. He was getting to Wisconsin before Joe Biden was, after all. What if Trump gave a unifying speech that really connected with people? Of course these observers must have forgotten who Trump is.

Trump’s visit to Kenosha yesterday had no impact one way or the other, just as Palmer Report predicted. He wanted the headlines to be about how he was going to magically fix the violence there. Instead the headlines were about Trump’s false claims about Jacob Blake’s family pastor, and about the owner of a vandalized business who refused to pose for a photo with Trump.

If anything, now that the sitting President of the United States has done such an ineffective job of visiting Kenosha, it’s opened the door for Joe Biden’s visit โ€“ scheduled for later this week โ€“ to have even more of an impact. Biden didn’t rush there and try to make the difficult situation all about him. He worked with local leaders and agreed to show up on the timetable that they were comfortable with.

There’s a reason Joe Biden is winning this election. He understands how political strategy and maneuvering actually work. He understands picking his spots for maximum impact โ€“ as opposed to Donald Trump, who narcissistically runs his mouth about himself nonstop, and tunes the majority of voters out in the process. Trump blew it in Kenosha, and opened the door for Biden to make real gains there when he visits.
