Of all the numerous controversial and scandalous resignations from Donald Trump’s unstable White House staff, the departure of Hope Hicks was one of the most dramatic and jarring. Yet it was not at all surprising, and based on the timing it wasn’t difficult to figure out what put her over the edge. Now, with Special Counsel Robert Mueller closing in, Trump is making a bizarre panic move with regard to Hicks.

Earlier this year, Donald Trump’s closest adviser Hope Hicks was brought in to testify before the Trump-aligned House Intel Committee about her role in the Trump-Russia coverup, amid reports that former Trump legal adviser Mark Corallo had sold her out to Robert Mueller for obstruction of justice. It was fairly obvious that Trump was using his allies on the committee to try to suss out whether or not Hicks was cutting a plea deal. The day after her testimony, Hicks abruptly announced her resignation from the White House.

It was clear she was trying to divorce herself from the scandal; the only question was whether or not she cut a plea deal in the process. To this day, we still don’t know whether or not she flipped on Trump, or whether she merely flipped out. But now that Trump is once again revamping his White House senior staff, amid widespread reports that Chief of Staff John Kelly will be among those forced out, suddenly Trump is talking openly about trying to bring Hicks back as his new Chief of Staff. No, really.

This started out as mere media buzz. But when a reporter asked Donald Trump if he’s truly trying to bring Hope Hicks back, this was his answer: “I love Hope. She’s great. I hope that — I’ve been hearing little things like that.” We don’t know what that means, but it wasn’t a “no.” Trump clearly fears that Hicks is about to flip on him, and he’s trying to bribe her by offering her a higher ranking job than her old one.
