Attorney General Merrick Garland has agreed to testify at a Republican controlled House Judiciary Committee hearing in September. This will be a much hyped non-event. Each time Garland is asked about the Donald Trump probe or any other probe, he’ll just cite DOJ policy about not commenting on ongoing investigations.

The only way these kinds of hostile hearings ever end up being newsworthy is if the witness gets loose lipped and accidentally reveals something. But Garland isn’t that type.

House Republicans know they’ll get nothing out of their “showdown” with Garland. They’re only holding this hearing so they can look like they’re doing something – and so they can falsely claim to their base that they “destroyed” Garland, so they can fundraise off it.

The only real soundbites will be the three or four instances in which House Democrats use their allotted time to point out that Trump is actually guilty of all the phony conspiracy theories that the Republicans are spewing about the Bidens.

Beyond that, the entire hearing will have no impact and will be forgotten in a day. But that won’t keep us from having to listen to three months of media hype about it in the meantime.
