Donald Trump had a bad day on Monday to say the least. Joe Biden shellacked him with a powerful and memorable speech. Trump’s own lawyers admitted in a court filing that they’re afraid he’ll be criminally indicted. And new polling suggests that Trump is losing the military vote. Trump’s Monday afternoon press briefing was a tepid disaster. Then he went on Fox News on Monday night and made it all even worse for himself.

Trump sat down with Fox News host Laura Ingraham and said this about the police: “They can do ten thousand great acts, which is what they do, and one bad apple, or a choker, you know, a choker, they choke. Shooting the guy, shooting the guy in the back many times … but they choke, just like in a golf tournament they miss a three foot putt.”

At that point Trump was so derangedly off the rails that even Ingraham felt compelled to jump in to try to save him, cutting him off and insisting that “You’re not comparing it to golf” after Trump had just finished comparing it to golf.

If Donald Trump were looking for a legitimate analogy here, “choking” would be when a police officer tries to shoot a suspect from close range in a justified shooting but misses the shot. What happened in Kenosha would be the equivalent of a golfer purposely hitting another player in the head with his club. In any case, Trump just compared racist murder to missing a golf shot, which means he just made things worse for himself. Tuesday’s headlines were already going to be enough for him. Now they’ll include the golf thing.
