Donald Trump’s oldest friend Roger Stone is not exactly what you’d call a reliable narrator. He yells “fake news” at every real story he doesn’t like, and he’s changed his own Trump-Russia story so many times we’ve lost track. So when he makes any claim about the scandal, we’re tempted to take it with a grain or salt or three. But in this instance he’s making a claim so big that, whether it’s true or not, it means something is up.
Roger Stone gave an interview to a pro-Trump site called The Political Insider, and he made the claim that a member of the Trump family is the next to be indicted: “The special counsel is going to charge Donald Trump Jr. with lying to the FBI. Notice they’re not charging him for having an illegal meeting with a Russian at Trump Tower because there’s nothing illegal about that meeting.”
Now, is this something that Roger Stone could actually know? Maybe, maybe not. Numerous friends and associates of Stone have been hauled before Robert Mueller’s grand jury of late, and it’s possible the questions asked by prosecutors could have tipped off the fact that Donald Trump Jr is an imminent target. However, Stone’s interactions with Russia and WikiLeaks appear to have been separate from Trump Jr’s interactions with Russia and WikiLeaks. This leaves two other possibilities.
One is that Donald Trump and Roger Stone were talking recently, as they tend to do, and Trump told Stone that he fears Trump Jr is about to be indicted for lying to the FBI. Another possibility is that Stone is flat out making this up, because he’s been informed by Robert Mueller that he’s about get indicted, and he’s trying to manipulate Donald Trump into taking drastic action against Mueller. It’s difficult to parse the truth when the source is someone as unreliable as Stone – but we do know that this means something big is in play behind the scenes.
