Donald Trump is coming off one of the most humiliatingly inept and deranged weeks in the history of the United States presidency, as questions grow louder about his mental competence. Now, at the worst time for him and for the nation, Trump finds himself on the world stage at the G7 Summit in France. Yesterday, Palmer Report predicted that Trump would make an even bigger fool of himself in short order. Unfortunately, we’ve already been proven correct.

Trump posted this tweet today: “Just had lunch with French President @EmmanuelMacron. Many good things are happening for both of our countries. Big weekend with other world leaders!” Okay, good, that’s a nice start. By all accounts, Trump didn’t even embarrass himself too badly during the lunch. The trouble is that this was his second attempt at the tweet.

Trump originally tweeted that he’d just had lunch with “French President @EmanuelMacrone” – and that’s a problem. Not only is it the latest reminder that Trump can’t spell anything, it also ended up being a link to a Macron parody account that largely exists to make fun of Trump.

Although it’s humiliating that the President of the United States is semi-literate and is unwilling to use the vast resources of his office to hire a proofreader for his tweets, most of his misspellings are ultimately just embarrassing, not harmful. International diplomacy is a different beast. Emmanuel Macron might be busy laughing at the fact that Trump managed to misspell his first and last name today. But in other diplomatic situations, this kind of ignorant misspelling can actually set back international relations.
