Donald Trump lost about half a billion dollars today, once you factor in all the interest penalties. He’s now financially ruined. You can’t have much worse of a day than that.

But one small thing did go right for Trump today: he didn’t have any major senile moments today. That is, of course, only because he didn’t attempt to give a speech today. He did briefly appear on camera, and he promptly claimed that the state of New York is no longer going to exist. But because he didn’t get up and spend an hour in front of a microphone, he didn’t end up garnering a full day’s worth of headlines about his senility.

It’s a remarkable reminder that from a political standpoint, the best thing that Donald Trump can do for himself is to shut up and disappear. That’s the only way to keep his worsening senility out of the headlines for the day. Of course he can’t do that every day, or else the media will start asking why he’s only pretending to be running for office. So it’s really a catch-22 for him.

At a time when the entire deck is stacked against Donald Trump, from civil trials that are bankrupting him to four criminal trials that are each going to come with prison sentences, he would need to be sharper than ever to have even a small chance of surviving. Instead he’s so senile, he can’t even appear in public without generating new headlines about how senile he is. Even on a day when he lost his fortune and mostly shut up, his senility still loomed larger than ever.
