When New York Attorney General Letitia James began cracking down on the Trump Organization, some folks expressed concern that Donald Trump would just try to move around the money and hide it so that the authorities couldn’t seize it. But it doesn’t really work that way. One of the reasons is that at the start of a process like this, the court appoints someone to watch every financial move that Trump and his company are making.

To that end, even though Trump’s civil fraud trial in New York has wrapped and is merely awaiting the final verdict, the court appointed monitor in the case accused Trump of hiding about $48 million in income. This is a big deal because the move could be seen as criminal in nature. This is a civil probe, but it can easily spin off into criminal territory if warranted. For instance, Alvin Bragg’s criminal case against Trump is partly connected to Letitia James’ civil case.

So it’s not surprising that Trump, through his legal team, is throwing a fit about what’s been uncovered. Team Trump is, naturally, claiming the court appointed monitor is the one who’s committing some kind of financial fraud. Yawn. We all know how this kind of projection works by now.

If anything the story here is that Donald Trump and his team seem to be very concerned about what’s been uncovered here. We’ll see where this goes. But it’s a good reminder that the ucpoming civil verdict against Trump, which could be perhaps $370 million, may be just the start of where this case is heading.
