Each time Donald Trump has made a nonsense filing or hopeless appeal in his January 6th federal criminal trial, we’ve seen it referred to as a “delay tactic.” But this term doesn’t fit, because none of Trump’s actions have any chance of actually delaying his trial. It’s still set for March 2024, like it’s always been.

When Jack Smith made a filing on Monday asking the Supreme Court to swiftly rule on Trump’s “presidential immunity” claim, it wasn’t some desperation move; Smith is already winning. Smith made this filing in order to take advantage of Trump’s idiotic remarks about Judge Chutkan no longer being in charge of the trial while he was appealing her latest ruling. This is Smith’s way of making sure the trial, which is already set to start on time, remains that way.

So even as people kept asking when the Supreme Court was going to rule on Jack Smith’s request, I said it didn’t really matter. There’s plenty of time between now and March 2024 for all of this nonsense to be out of the way. More importantly, it’s not as if the pretrial proceedings are magically halted while the appeals process plays out.

Funny thing is, though, it looks like Trump really did think the entire proceedings were going to be magically halted during the appeals process. Jack Smith is continuing to make pretrial filings with Judge Chutkan, because that’s how things work. And Trump is throwing a fit about it, because he doesn’t know how things work.

Donald Trump has no idea what he’s up against, and no capacity to educate himself or understand it. Either he’s so far gone that his attorneys can’t explain it to him, or he’s reached the point where his latest attorneys don’t even bother explaining these things to him.

One of the big reasons Donald Trump is going to lose this trial and go to prison is that he has no idea what the battle even is. He thought the pretrial proceedings were going to magically stop just because an appeal is in play. He had no idea that the proceedings were going to continue advancing so that once the appeals are out of the way, the trial can start on time. Trump’s delusional obliviousness is yet another reason why he doesn’t stand a chance.
