On Thursday Donald Trump was criminally indicted for conspiring to destroy Mar-a-Lago surveillance recordings that were under subpoena. This is a good way to get almost automatically convicted at trial, regardless of what the jury thinks of the underlying Espionage Act charges. But there may be more to it than just Trump being a dumb criminal and an inept coverup artist.

Trump is now throwing a fit on social media about the surveillance tapes that Jack Smith appears to have acquired without Trump’s help: “The Security Tapes that were VOLUNTARILY given to Deranged Jack Smith and the DOJ were not, I am told, deleted in any way, shape, or form.”

It’s not just that Trump is falsely claiming he turned over the surveillance footage when he instead tried to destroy it. It’s that Trump now knows that Jack Smith did manage to obtain Mar-a-Lago surveillance footage. While these recordings were subpoenaed for the purpose of proving that Trump stole and hid classified documents, there could easily be other damning things on these recordings.

Since Trump was forced out of office and retreated to Mar-a-Lago, the place has become a cesspool of lowlife visitors, some of whom may be conducting underhanded business with Trump. There have been reports of rogue world leaders visiting Trump there. And this is a guy who’s currently awaiting criminal trial for stealing classified documents. What else is on those surveillance tapes that has Trump in such a panic?
