The courts have rejected Donald Trump’s request to delay the start of his second civil trial against E. Jean Carroll. This doesn’t come as a surprise. As I’ve been saying for awhile, Trump doesn’t have a magic “delay” wand he can use to drag out his trials to his liking. That’s just not a thing.

Once a judge firmly decides that a certain trial is going to happen within a certain timeframe, the person who doesn’t want the trial to happen can’t magically delay it just by making nuisance filings.

We saw this when the judge in the first E. Jean Carroll trial finally decided that it was going to start on April 25th. No matter what Trump filed after that, it had no impact. It didn’t delay the start of the trial by a single day. It started on April 25th as expected. It’s going to be the same with the second E. Jean Carroll trial.

It’ll also be this way with Trump’s criminal trials. To be clear, the initial date set by the judge doesn’t always end up being the actual start date. As things go along, the judge will sometimes decide there are reasons to change the date. But that’s only when the judge sees legitimate reasons. Once the judge is locked in about the trial starting, that’s that. Nuisance filings and appeals don’t do anything at that point.

So what is Trump even hoping to accomplish by making these kinds of desperation filings in the E. Jean Carroll case? The same thing he’s hoping to accomplish by asking for his January 6th criminal trial to begin in the year 2026: nothing. These aren’t real tactics. They’re not going to delay things by a single day or help Trump in any way. This is simply the kind of desperation you see on display from someone who knows he’s out of options and powerless, yet wants to try to convince himself that he still magically has some way out of this. Nothing more.
