Donald Trump spent days insisting that “ALL HELL” was going to break loose on the first day of his criminal trial. Instead his tired supporters mostly stayed home, and Trump reportedly fell asleep at the table during his trial. Now it turns out it apparently wasn’t a one-off.

Reporter Frank Runyeon from Law360 tweeted this earlier today: “Trump’s head slowly dropped, his eyes closed. It jerked back upward. He adjusts himself. Then, his head droops again. He straightens up, leaning back. His head doops for a third time, he shakes his shoulders. Eyes closed still. His head drops. Finally, he pops his eyes open.”

Runyeon made clear that this happened today, and was not a recap of yesterday. In other words, Trump has now dozed off during his first two days on trial. This is nothing short of remarkable. Trump is on criminal trial and is facing potential prison time, yet he’s so far gone, he can’t stay awake for the proceedings.

There has been a lot of talk on social media about why this might be the case, much of it involving speculation about drug use. But there may be a much simpler explanation. When Trump does something like a rally speech, he’s only on stage for a short time. But in a trial like this, he’s on display for a full eight hours, or however long each court day goes.

If Trump is so deep into dementia and other health problems that he can’t stay awake and focused for more than an hour at a time, and his handlers have been trying to hide it by limiting his public appearances to brief windows, then this trial may be exposing just how far gone he truly is.
