Sarah Huckabee Sanders is finally getting what she’s long had coming
As recently as last week, many (not all) voices in the mainstream media were seizing the opportunity to defend White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. And why not? After all, she’s the one who decides which of their news outlets get to ask questions during press briefings. It turns out they picked the wrong time to align themselves with Huckabee Sanders, because this week everything went off the rails for her.
After comedian Michelle Wolf made a series of harsh but accurate jokes about what a liar Sarah Huckabee Sanders is, numerous members of the mainstream media falsely claimed that Wolf had attacked Huckabee Sanders’ physical appearance, just so they could “defend” her and score points with her. Plenty of mainstream media reporters don’t care that Huckabee Sanders lies to them during press briefings on a daily basis, because they know when she’s lying, and they know how to avoid marrying themselves to her lies in their reporting. But now she’s committed a different kind of sin, and one that’s blown back on them.
Rudy Giuliani admitted on live national television this week that Donald Trump did indeed reimburse Michael Cohen for his illegal payoff to Stormy Daniels, after Trump had spent months denying it. This placed Sarah Huckabee Sanders in the position of having to walk into the press briefing and basically admit she didn’t know Trump had made the reimbursement. It’s one thing for her to purposely tell obvious lies on Trump’s behalf; that only harms the public, not the reporters in the room with her. But when Trump is lying to Huckabee Sanders, leaving her in a position where she has no idea she’s giving false information to reporters, it makes her a liability to them.
It’s why the mainstream media is finally announcing this week that Sarah Huckabee Sanders has lost “credibility.” That word is now being used by cable news networks and major newspapers alike. Of course the truth is that she never had any credibility to begin with, because she’s been lying since the day she took the job. But now that the mainstream no longer feels safe in trying to parse when she’s lying and when she’s being lied to, they’re done with her. Much more of these kinds of headlines, and Donald Trump will have to dump her in order to make the headlines go away, just like he did with Sean Spicer.
