Even if today’s impeachment witnesses had presented proof that Donald Trump murdered Santa Claus, pro-Trump stooges on Fox News like Hannity and Ingraham would still have tried to spin it as a good day for Trump. But if you want a sense of how the average person might end up interpreting the day’s events, Chris Wallace tends to be a solid barometer.

It’s not that Chris Wallace is the most insightful of pundits. It’s just that he’s the one legitimate host that Fox News puts on the air in order to provide cover for the fact that its other hosts are propagandists and clowns. Wallace tends to end up saying, whether by coincidence or design, whatever the people in the political middle are expecting to hear.

So it’s a big deal that after the first two witnesses testified in today’s televised House impeachment hearings, Chris Wallace said on-air that the testimony was “very damaging to the president.” Wallace went on to say that Bill Taylor was an “impressive” witness who “certainly wasn’t taking any partisan position.”

For those Fox News viewers who aren’t part of the Trump cult and still aren’t sure what to make of the Ukraine scandal or the impeachment process, this kind of analysis from Chris Wallace ends up being influential. And when it comes to moving impeachment poll numbers, it’s entirely about those people in the middle.
