This morning, Donald Trump went bonkers even by his standards. He frantically begged Attorney General Jeff Sessions to end Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump-Russia scandal. He tried to defend Paul Manafort, but ended up comparing him to Al Capone. It was clear that something specific had prompted Trump to completely lose it. Now we have that answer, and it’s coming from Mueller himself.

For quite some time now, Robert Mueller has been seeking to get Donald Trump to sit down for an interview about his various criminal scandals. Trump and his legal team have tried to negotiate this in public, first asking that the questions be submitted solely in writing, and more recently insisting that the questions be limited to the Trump-Russia election conspiracy, as opposed to Trump’s subsequent obstruction of justice. This all seemed to be an attempt at getting Mueller to give up on the interview entirely, so that Trump could turn around and claim that Mueller never bothered to let him plead his case. But just moments ago, Mueller called Trump’s bluff.

It’s now being reported in a Washington Post headline that Robert Mueller offered to “limit investigators’ questions for Trump” a day or two ago. There are no further details yet, and the accompanying article is only two sentences long, as this story is still breaking. But it tells us three crucial things. First, Mueller is publicly offering to meet Trump halfway on the interview, thus ensuring that the general public will see Mueller as having treated Trump reasonably. Second, its means that Trump must now decide whether to agree, or to risk being subpoenaed. Third, it means that Mueller is at the finish line.

In a multilevel criminal investigation, the kingpin at the top of the hierarchy is only interviewed once the rest of the investigation is complete. We don’t know yet if this means that Mueller has completely finished investigating Trump, or if he’s merely finished building one of his specific criminal cases against Trump; there will be several, ranging from conspiracy against the United States, to obstruction, to financial crimes. But now we know that Mueller is ready to make his move against Trump, and that Trump was aware of this when he went berserk this morning. No wonder he’s completely losing it.
