Based on the reactions alone from the members of Congress who stepped out to face the cameras during breaks in Bill Taylor’s impeachment testimony yesterday, it’s clear that this marks the beginning of the end of Donald Trump’s presidency. Even as we wait for more details of Taylor’s testimony to surface, what’s astounding is how Trump put Taylor in position to take him down.

When Donald Trump fired the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, he did so because he was afraid she was too honest and she would stand in the way of the corrupt scheming that Trump and Rudy Giuliani were carrying out in Ukraine. This was a risky and illegal move on Trump’s part. If he was going to stick his neck out like that, you’d think he’d have taken a moment to make sure it had a chance of working out in his favor.

But that would have required effort and competence, two things that the Trump regime lacks. After Donald Trump fired Yovanovitch, he and his henchmen replaced her with – you guessed it – Bill Taylor. If you’ve paid attention to the news over the past few days, you’ve learned about Taylor’s fifty year record of selfless nonpartisan service to his country, and you’ve figured out that there was no way he would have simply played along with Trump’s Ukraine antics. Yet after Trump took out Yovanovitch for being too honest, he and his team essentially replaced Yovanovitch with another Yovanovitch.

In other words, by installing a patriot like Bill Taylor in Ukraine, Donald Trump took himself down. All he had to do was study up on Taylor and see that this was not the kind of corruptible loyalist he needed, and look elsewhere for an Acting U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. But again, fortunately, Trump and his people are incredibly bad at this whole villainy thing.
