Arizona Republicans just made a huge mistake

When the Arizona Supreme Court made the insane ruling that an 1864 law means abortion is fully outlawed in the state, it put Arizona Republicans in a deep hole for the November elections. The smart move would have been for the Republican controlled Arizona state legislature to strike down the 1864 law and start over on abortion policy. But when Democrats tried to do that today, the Republicans repeatedly blocked the move.

Arizona Republicans are playing to their base with this move, but it’s an unbelievably stupid strategy. This now means that Republicans will be in an even bigger hole in November, now that the Democrats will be able to run ads pointing out that the Republicans refused to repeal the 1864 law.

Keep in mind that Arizona isn’t just about the presidential election in November. There is a competitive Senate race in the state, along with two competitive House races that the Democrats may be able to flip.
