Donald Trump is doing a Fox News town hall right now about the coronavirus. The questions asked by Fox News viewers thus far have been surprisingly reasonable. This crisis appears to have scared them into focusing on things that matter, like how they’re going to feed their kids or keep their small business out of bankruptcy, and what the real story is with treatment drugs and a vaccine.

Unfortunately for Donald Trump, he’s not able to answer these kinds of reasonable questions. When a man asked Trump about keeping his husband-and-wife small business afloat, Trump rambled about airline bailouts instead. When a woman asked Trump about feeding her kids and getting her stimulus check, he bragged about how great the economy used to be. When he was asked another coronavirus related question, he began ranting about the Governor of Washington.

At one point a Fox News viewer asked Donald Trump if he was willing to lay off his usual petty squabbles so he could focus on the current crisis instead. This question came from a self-identified Trump fan, which tells you that even his base may be starting to feel some frustration about how badly he’s blowing this. Trump’s response was to rant incoherently about Joe Biden’s family.

If Fox News were in a mood to make Donald Trump look good tonight, it could have cherry picked some questions that were more fawning and less challenging. Instead Fox appeared more interested in maintaining relative credibility with its own audience, by airing questions that addressed the apprehension that even Fox viewers are feeling about this crisis. Trump couldn’t handle it at all. He must have agreed to this town hall because he thought the questions would all be about how great he is. That didn’t happen.
