“Donald Trump’s base will never stop supporting him no matter what” is one of the most often repeated phrases in all of politics. It’s also one of the most misleading. For one thing, Trump’s core base is only a relatively small fraction of the overall Republican base, as evidenced by the fact that he keeps failing to get much more than 50% of the 2024 Republican primary vote despite a lack of serious competition.

It also turns out Trump’s base – as defined by people who voted for him in the past – is indeed losing a number of people:

So let’s stop with the “Trump’s base will never stop supporting him no matter what” narrative. It’s clearly not true, because a number of former Trump voters are making clear that they are ending their support for him.
