If Donald Trump’s fairly obvious grift about running for president again in 2024 has managed to fool anyone, it’s probably Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina senator who was one of the former guy’s staunchest critics back in 2016. While the party is prepared to go on without him at full speed, with Mitch McConnell once again leading the charge and blocking everything in his power in the Senate, Graham has decided it’s at least good for the party’s image to do what he’s good at by melting down in public and demanding that McConnell be respectful of Donald Trump and his future in the party – not just on the Senate floor but making his rounds on the talk shows as well, particularly Hannity where he embarrassed himself in 2020 with desperate pleas for money in his own senate race.

The problem is that it’s given a window into how the GOP is struggling to keep up appearances behind the scenes – with McConnell, who never used to care about coming off as the villain. This time, however, MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace sided with McConnell and called out Graham on his demented rant, asking point blank: “What is a working relationship with the de-platformed, under criminal investigation, loser even look like? What’s that even mean?”

It’s probably a question that people like Wallace should have asked to begin with – and comes shortly after Trump’s NPR interview was cut short when he was asked for proof that the 2020 election was stolen from him. While we have an extensive amount of work ahead of us for 2022 and 2024, it’s clear the GOP has lost the narrative – and keeping a united front has gotten more and more difficult.
