Donald Trump goes berserk after Senate Intel leader confirms it’s Mueller Time
Special Counsel Robert Mueller has so many irons in the fire when it comes to the Trump-Russia scandal, it’s become tricky to keep track of them all: Paul Manafort, Roger Stone, Erik Prince, Michael Cohen (technically under the jurisdiction of SDNY), and several others. So when will Mueller drop his next bombs, and who will they land on? Senate Intel Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner is now providing a big clue, and the revelation has sent Trump over the edge.
The Senate Intel Committee is the only congressional investigation into the Trump-Russia scandal that’s fully functioning in bipartisan fashion, and it’s widely believed to be the one that’s working the most closely with Robert Mueller. Here’s what Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat, reportedly said to a crowd at a private fundraiser: “If you get me one more glass of wine, I’ll tell you stuff only Bob Mueller and I know. If you think you’ve seen wild stuff so far, buckle up. It’s going to be a wild couple of months.”
There are two things to consider here. The first is that Warner wouldn’t say something like this, even as a quip, unless it’s true. So it is Mueller Time. The other thing here is that, by rule, everything known by Warner is also known by his Republican counterpart, Senate Intel Committee Chairman Richard Burr. The two of them get briefed on classified evidence that the rest of the committee doesn’t get to see. Warner and Burr have shown bipartisan solidarity on the Trump-Russia probe from the start. So obviously Warner meant that only he, Burr, and Mueller’s team had the information.
Nonetheless, Donald Trump went berserk about it anyway, posting this asinine tweet full of false accusations: “Why is Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), perhaps in a near drunken state, claiming he has information that only he and Bob Mueller, the leader of the 13 Angry Democrats on a Witch Hunt, knows? Isn’t this highly illegal. Is it being investigated?” In other words, Trump is rattled at the revelation that it’s Mueller Time.
