Donald Trump has spent around one-third of his presidency vacationing at his various properties around the nation, but for reasons known only to him, he’s made a point of consistently avoiding his primary residence of Trump Tower in New York City. But today out of nowhere he announced that he’s heading into New York for “meetings” with unknown individuals – just after he finished evicting the Secret Service from Trump Tower.

This morning, amid the usual tweets about “fake news” and insults, Trump threw in this little nugget: “Working hard from New Jersey while White House goes through long planned renovation. Going to New York next week for more meetings.” (link). He was trying to fend off mounting criticism of his seventeen day golf vacation in New Jersey, by suggesting that he will in fact get a little bit of work done. But in the process he gave away the fact that he’s heading back to Trump Tower, which was never officially on his vacation agenda. And there may be a good reason he’s headed there at this particular time.

Just four days ago, Donald Trump finished running the Secret Service out of Trump Tower. The agency had long had a command post in the building, just one floor adjacent to Trump’s personal residence. But according to the Washington Post, around a month ago he evicted them, forcing them to relocate to a trailer on the sidewalk (link). And now the Trump Organization has informed the Secret Service that they should move into some other building.

So now that Donald Trump has finally gotten the Secret Service command post out of Trump Tower and off his property altogether, he’s suddenly willing to set foot in Trump Tower for the first time in more than six months. It suggests that Trump, in his increasingly paranoid state, has thought all along that the Secret Service was spying on him. It also raises the question of what he’s trying to hide.
