Score one for the good guys

We’re used to the truly unhinged and reckless decisions being made by a conservative SCOTUS that doesn’t really care too much about a veneer of impartiality these days, so it was a bit of a surprise when the Wisconsin state supreme court on Wednesday struck down that state’s near total abortion ban – one that’s been on the books since 1849 and never formally repealed since the days when Roe v. Wade officially nullified it.

Roe v. Wade being overturned, therefore, was the reason a lot of conservatives argued that the 176-year-old law was back on the books. That officially went away in this new decision: Wisconsin ruled in favor of a woman’s right to choose and in favor of reproductive healthcare.

It’s a rare bit of good news when a lot of the media is focusing on the consequences that came with electing Republicans, even if they won’t make the association directly. I choose to highlight it, however, because this is the consequence of a liberal nominee winning the state’s supreme court race back in April.

Despite Elon Musk pouring all his resources into the race to elect Brad Schimel, we beat him decisively at the ballot box and this 4-3 decision wouldn’t be possible. This is why we need to ‘vote harder’ and why local elections are so important – and that’s why we need to focus our energy on winning again in 2025 and 2026.
