The history books may end up writing that Donald Trump and Mike Pence were both taken down by the same piece of evidence, and that today was the day that evidence surfaced. In fact today’s new evidence, which is now known to be in the hands of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, has one prominent law professor talking about Trump and Pence both being impeached over it – and Nancy Pelosi becoming President instead.

That evidence comes in the form of a letter that Donald Trump and his adviser Stephen Miller wrote together, which explained why FBI Director James Comey was being fired. That letter has not been published, but it was apparently an unwitting admission that Trump was firing Comey in order to sabotage the FBI’s Russia investigation and obstruct justice. The New York Times (link) is reporting that not only does Special Counsel Robert Mueller have a copy of that letter, he also has evidence that Mike Pence knew of the letter. This makes Pence guilty of multiple felonies.

Harvard Law Professor Laurence Tribe now says that “Pence hid what he knew about a serious federal crime. That’s misprision of felony.” (link). After someone replied with an image of shock, Professor Tribe responded “This is what VP Pence has to be thinking tonight. President Ryan?” Then another respondent pointed out that if the Democrats take the majority in the midterms and then Pence is impeached and removed, Nancy Pelosi would become Speaker of the House and she would be next in line for the Presidency, not Paul Ryan.

That led Laurence Tribe to quip “Good point. Pelosi it is, then. But there are promises to keep and miles to go before we sleep.” (link). For Pelosi to become President, a series of events would need to take place within specific timeframes. Donald Trump would need to be impeached and removed. The Democrats would need to retake the House in the midterms. Mike Pence would also need to be impeached and removed, which could be tricky because removal requires sixty-seven Senate votes, which would need to include some Republicans. But at that point Nancy Pelosi would be in line to assume the White House.
