Three weeks ago Palmer Report brought you the story of Rudy Giuliani trying to cut a deal with the FBI to flip on Donald Trump, but the FBI initially rebuffed him (link). Then two weeks ago we brought the update that Giuliani had in fact cut a deal, though it wasn’t clear whether his deal was with the FBI or the State of New York (link). Today, FBI Director James Comey confirmed during his public testimony that the FBI has indeed been investigating Rudy Giuliani.

Comey always speaks tersely in these hearings but chooses his words carefully, and never puts anything out there unless he wants it out there. During today’s hearings, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont asked Comey, “Did anybody in the FBI during this 2016 campaign have contact with Rudy Giuliani about the Clinton investigation?” Comey answered that he doesn’t know yet, but he’s “very, very interested” in finding out, and that there will be “severe consequences” for anyone in the FBI who leaked any such information.

Notably, James Comey often likes to point out that he never comments on ongoing investigations except when the public interest dictates that he must. So why is he publicly confirming that he’s trying to get to the bottom of the FBI’s apparent leaks to Rudy Giuliani? Perhaps he feels the public is entitled to know about the leaks coming from his own house. Or perhaps it’s a sign that while Comey is still looking into who in the FBI gave Giuliani the information, Giuliani himself is no longer under investigation. Seemingly, the only way that would be possible is if Giuliani has indeed cut a deal. Help fund Palmer Report
