In the days since Special Counsel Robert Mueller cut a plea deal with Michael Flynn, all eyes have been focused on the same question: who’s next? There are only a handful of people Flynn could have given up in order to get the lenient deal that he did. Various signs have pointed to it being Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Now Kushner himself is sending up a flare and tipping off that he knows it’s about to hit the fan for him.

Kushner and his legal team are in the process of hiring a crisis management firm, according to a new Washington Post report (link). What does this mean? Congressman Ted Lieu explained it in this manner: “The only reason Jared Kushner would hire a crisis public relations firm is because … wait for it … A CRISIS IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN TO HIM. Also, anyone who needs a crisis firm should not have a security clearance. Oh, and Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, you backed the wrong person.”

There are at least a few different reasons why Kushner could want a crisis management firm at this time, but none of them are good. If he’s been informed that he’s about to be arrested, he could be hiring the firm to try to protect his reputation as he fights the criminal charges involved. If he’s decided to cut a plea deal against Donald Trump, he could be looking to protect his reputation during the resulting fallout.

Regardless of what’s about to play out, Ted Lieu is correct: people don’t hire crisis management firms unless they know they’re about to face an imminent public relations crisis. The move doesn’t mean he’s guilty, but it does strongly signal that he believes he’s about to be formally accused of something very serious. WaPo Says Jared Kushner began working on hiring a firm two weeks ago, so this storyline may be much further along than we know. Stay tuned.
