Even for Donald Trump this is berserk

The Republican Party managed to ram a version of its evil budget bill through the Senate with zero votes to spare. Now we’ll see if the Republican House is willing to swallow it, or if the House is going to stand its ground and demand an even more evil version of the bill. If it feels like the Republican Congress is in an awful big hurry to get this over with, it could be because of what’s going on down the street from them.

So far this week Donald Trump has threatened to deport Elon Musk, threatened to surround prisoners with imaginary sharks, picked a fight with Japan for no apparent reason, melted down about Harvard, posted a fake video of himself playing guitar, and threatened to feed prisoners to snakes. To be clear, the shark thing and the snake thing are two different incidents.

Trump is obviously mentally incompetent, and has been for some time. But this is unhinged even for him. Trump isn’t acting like someone who’s about to get his big corrupt bill passed into law. He’s acting like someone who’s at the end stage of a mental breakdown and is in the process of losing everything. Then again, when someone is losing their faculties, it can feel like they’re losing everything.

The Republican House and Senate may be complicit, but they’re not blind. They know that their “President” is a senile blob who is becoming more glaringly unfit for office by the hour. They see his approval rating going down. They see his dementia riddled obsession with sharks growing.

It’s difficult to predict where things will go from here, if only because the people around Trump and the Republican Party at large are so unwilling to follow any rules of common sense. Will they continue to allow a massively unpopular, utterly clueless, and visibly braindead Trump remain in office even as he becomes more and more of a hindrance to what they’re trying to do? Or is there a point where they’ll try to convince Trump’s babysitters that it’s time to have him “retire” in favor of JD Vance? If Trump quits, he goes to prison. But with his advanced dementia, does he even understand that anymore?

So we’ll see where this goes next. But in terms of viability, Trump doesn’t seem to have much time left. One way or the other, things are about to become highly untenable for the Republicans – and they appear to know it.
