Speaker of the House Paul Ryan just leaked to the media through friends that he’s considering retiring at the end of his current term, or resigning before his term is up. The revelation has sent shockwaves through the political landscape. Even though Ryan’s Republican Party is reeling as Donald Trump collapses, the timing of this news raises questions – and there may only be one explanation.

Let’s be clear about how bizarre the timing of this is. Ryan’s lifelong goal is to steal money from the poor and give it to the wealthy, under the delusional belief that doing so will somehow make America a better place. His Republican Party’s tax scam bill is the closest he’ll ever come to making his dream a reality, and he knows it. The GOP is already having trouble with the latter stages of the legislation because the party is facing one chaotic distraction after another. Ryan just created the most problematic distraction of all.

Why would Ryan risk his tax scam at this crucial moment? The most logical explanation is that he has bigger issues, and he’s suddenly floating the idea of his retirement or resignation because he needs to set his own exit strategy in motion. Unless he has some personal scandal brewing that we don’t know anything about, the only explanation for this is if he’s been caught up in the Trump-Russia scandal after all.

When Congressman Kevin McCarthy was caught on tape saying that he thought Vladimir Putin was paying Donald Trump, which he probably meant as a joke, Paul Ryan panicked and swore the entire room to secrecy. It strongly suggested that Ryan knew something McCarthy didn’t. If Ryan knew during the election that Trump and Russia were illegally rigging the election, he’s at least guilty of misprision of a felony, and perhaps something more serious like conspiracy against the United States.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has proven himself to be so strict and thorough in the Trump-Russia scandal that he’s arrested people for as little as misleading the FBI. He’s surely investigated what Paul Ryan knew and when he knew it. Ryan, who has long been a political survivor, wouldn’t hesitate to cut a deal against Trump in order to save himself – but it would immediately end his career. Let’s keep an eye on what Ryan and Mueller say and do next, for more clues about what’s really going on here.
