With Jason Chaffetz bailing, Paul Ryan suddenly changes tune on Trump-Russia scandal

When Jason Chaffetz announced this week that he’s bailing out of Congress at the end of his term and possibly much sooner than that, there was already mounting intel community buzz that he’d gotten mixed up in the Russia scandal and that the FBI was onto him (link). That raises the question of whether he’s bailing to try to run from the scandal. So with Chaffetz having been swallowed up, it’s fascinating that now Speaker Paul Ryan is suddenly voicing his own support for investigating the Trump-Russia scandal.

Paul Ryan made the remarks on Friday, just two days after Jason Chaffetz announced he’s bailing out of Congress. Ryan was speaking with the Prime Minister of Estonia when he said “One thing we know for certain is that Russia meddled in our election.” Then he went on to add that “What we’re doing through our investigation process is to figure out exactly what is it they did and how they did it so that we can help, equip and assist our allies to prevent the same kind of thing happening to them” (source: Yahoo News). Wait, what? Why is he suddenly speaking the truth about this?

Sure, it could be coincidence. But it feels more like Ryan used the event as his first available opportunity to voice his new stance. Just a month ago, Paul Ryan was helping to steer Devin Nunes toward helping Trump to sabotage the investigation (link). But now suddenly Ryan wants to make sure everyone knows that he’s in favor of the Trump-Russia scandal being fully investigated. He didn’t mention Trump by name, but he didn’t have to. Considering the timing, this shift doesn’t feel like a coincidence.

Last week we told you there was also intel community buzz about Paul Ryan being implicated in the Trump-Russia scandal (link). And now that the Chaffetz domino is falling, suddenly Ryan is trying to get on the right side of the investigation. What does Ryan know that we don’t? And to whom might he be trying to send a signal that he’s now willing to cooperate with the investigation? Now more than ever, the game is afoot. Contribute to Palmer Report
