I remember back when Yassar Arafat’s compound was being torn apart by Israeli bulldozers, and Arafat was on the phone with CNN insisting that everything was going just great, even as you could literally hear the walls crashing down around him. That’s the only image that came to mind this morning when I read Donald Trump’s latest tweet about how the White House is “functioning perfectly.” Well, that and the cartoon of the dog saying “this is fine” with the house in flames.

I mean seriously, I don’t like to spend too much time exposing Donald Trump’s words when it’s more important to expose his actions, but what the hell does tweet even mean? “The W.H. is functioning perfectly, focused on HealthCare, Tax Cuts/Reform & many other things. I have very little time for watching T.V.” (link). Who believes this? Even his base knows everything is going terribly for him, even if they are rooting for him as eagerly as ever. I mean, this is the stuff of legend.

Trump thinks everything is “functioning perfectly” because of his health care bill that’s been failing for the past six months, his tax cut bill for the wealthy that doesn’t even exist, and “many other” pieces of legislation that don’t exist either. And for some reason he’s choosing now to suddenly insist that he doesn’t watch television, even though his own aides have consistently acknowledged that he watches several hours of cable news per day.

Back when I was watching Arafat that day, I kept asking myself whether he actually believed the denialism that was coming out of his mouth, or if he was just that adamant about convincing himself. At some point I realized it didn’t matter. In a political sense, Donald Trump’s walls are caving in and his house is on fire. What he thinks at this point doesn’t matter.
