Donald Trump finally found his way back to Twitter this morning, after a nearly thirty-six hour quiet period which had left some observers to wonder if he’d fallen down and hit his head, or perhaps gotten stuck in a tree. Now that he’s back in the game, not shockingly, he’s trying to pick a new feud in a manner that’s far less than presidential. But his latest target also gives away just how cut off, isolated, and outright senile he’s become.
Here’s what Trump tweeted out of the blue this morning: “Late Night host are dealing with the Democrats for their very “unfunny” & repetitive material, always anti-Trump! Should we get Equal Time? More and more people are suggesting that Republicans (and me) should be given Equal Time on T.V. when you look at the one-sided coverage?” In general terms, it’s not a real surprise to see him trying to pick a fight with late night hosts. With his approval rating in the gutter and his scandals exploding, it’s a given that late night hosts are routinely roasting him. But here’s the trouble, summed up in two words: Jimmy Kimmel.
Back when the latest failed Republican health care abomination was still a thing a few weeks ago, it was late night host Jimmy Kimmel who led the popular charge to defeat the bill. Kimmel was outraged that the bill failed to cover sick children, and he laid into Trump night after night over it. Based on his tweets at the time, Trump didn’t even seem to know it was happening, even though it was a huge story. It appeared Trump was the only person in the country who didn’t know that Kimmel was going after him.
Yet now, today, Donald Trump is suddenly trying to pick a fight with late night hosts – all of them. You’d think he’d be focusing on Kimmel, but no. Trump is attempting to launch this late night feud with no awareness that the Kimmel thing ever happened. Just how isolated and senile has he become?
